Kim Do-Hee

Abstract
This study examined the experts¡¯ perceptions of counseling for clients with disabilities (CCD) and counselors¡¯ competence, with the goal of identifying effective counseling strategies for the clients. Three experts in CCD participated in one-on-one in-depth interviews. The experts¡¯ perceptions of CCD and counselors¡¯ competence necessary for CCD were analyzed using a constant comparison method. Analyses resulted in five categories related to CCD: (a) clients¡¯ presenting concerns, (b) theoretical orientation, (c) therapeutic factors of effective CCD , (d) appropriate counseling goals, and (e) roles of counselors. Three categories related to the counselors¡¯ competence were also revealed: (a) knowledge, (b) attitude, and (c) skills. The findings of this study indicate that CCD differs from rehabilitation counseling and that counselors should develop general counseling competence and professional attitude when working with clients with disabilities. The findings also highlight that counselors aspire to continuously further understanding to different types and characteristics of disabilities and disability culture and to cultivate the attitude of acceptance and empathy toward clients with disabilities.
